Walker operates two Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) approved private special education schools for students who have complex learning needs and often have had disrupted educational histories. Beacon High School is located on our Watertown Campus, and the Walker School (serving both day students and residential education students) is located on our Needham Campus. Both schools provide students with a safe, supportive academic environment in which we offer educational curricula that align with state standards and intensive therapeutic services that promote students’ ability to access the curricula.
Both schools follow the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks; thus, our students receive instruction in the same subjects that are taught in mainstream public schools: math, reading, writing, language, art, science, social studies, health, and physical education. With these frameworks as a guide, our teachers design small-group classroom instruction to accommodate a range of students’ strengths and needs. Classroom instruction is supplemented with therapeutic services and special on and off-campus events designed to promote and enhance student learning and interaction.
